 Openings (Spring and Fall 2024)

We are looking for undergraduate students/graduate students/postdoc researchers with the engineering and physics background. A theoretical and/or experimental background in optics/photonics is required. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, enjoy a dynamic environment, and enjoy working with other people. Funding opportunities are also available for suitable candidates. If you are interested, you can contact me through email zhu3@clemson.edu

08/25/2023 update

We have an immediate postdoc opening in the field of hybrid photonic integration. Please refer to our recent publication in APL Photonics (https://doi.org/10.1063/5.0159527) about this research area. The ideal candidate should have experiences in semiconductor lasers, chip-scale photonic devices, and/or hybrid photonic integration. Either chip-scale photonic device packaging/testing/characterization or micro/nano fabrication experience is required. The expected pay scale for this position is around $70K/year plus benefits. Please contact me ASAP if you are interested in this opportunity.

We also have an immediate Ph.D. student opening in my group.

Our research topics:
High power, high brightness diode lasers and fiber lasers

Laser beam combining

Monolithic and hybrid photonic integration

Integrated quantum photonics
Optical periodic structures and coupled resonators

What do we do?
Explore the interface between fundamental physical principles and practical devices
Tackle challenging problems at the frontiers of science and engineering

What will you learn?
Theoretical analysis, nanofabrication methods, measurement techniques, and everything in between

About Clemson University
One of the country’s most selective public research universities, Clemson University serves a uniquely driven and highly accomplished student body.

Ranked as the 23rd best national public university by U.S.News & World Report, Clemson is a science- and engineering-oriented college dedicated to teaching, research and service. Founded in 1889, we remain committed both to world-class research and a high quality of life. In fact, 92 percent of our seniors say they’d pick Clemson again if they had it to do over.

Clemson’s retention and graduation rates rank among the highest in the country for public universities. We’ve been named among the best values by Kiplinger magazine in 2013, and SmartMoney in 2012 ranked us No. 7 in student return on investment.
